It was always my understanding that the statue was given to the U.S. to symbolize liberty; it was never set up or constructed to have anything to do with immigration. Our liberty has been stolen by the immigration advocates and its original meaning has been corrupted by pandering politicians, uninformed citizens and hungry immigration lawyers.
Polls indicate that more than 80 percent of Americans want illegal immigration stopped and legal immigration reduced to sustainable numbers. What is it about this issue that the panderers don't understand?

they understand but most of them have been in washington for so long they believe the will of the people is not important! Unfortunately, we keep voting them back in so why should they do any different?

People who immigrate to another country should have enough respect for their newly chosen nation to follow their laws and come in the right way. We have always had immigration. That hasn't changed. Republicans also want immigration reform but its a complete waste of time to make new immigration laws if they will not be enforced. We have immigration laws now but they are not enforced. The border is so porous that now instead of 600 major cities having a heavy presence of drug cartels, 1200 cities now do in just the last 5 years. People are dying because the Democrats want more Democrats. At what cost? I seriously doubt you even know what is in the Senate passed immigration bill. You just enjoy insulting people. Never mind the details or what those 1000 page bills contain.

The Statue of Liberty became a symbol of immigration as it was one of the first things in America that many immigrants saw. In addition, they went through "customs" on Ellis Island, right near the Statue of Liberty.
It was not, however, built to symbolize immigration. It was a thank you gift from France.
Also, I don't think anyone blatantly supports illegal immigration, but rather does not see it as such a big deal as it is portrayed.

Many do not realize that the Statue of Liberty was a gift to the U.S. from France, with the title, "Liberty Enlightening the World".
The statue and its symbolism had nothing to do with immigration, but rather hope that the rest of the world would adopt Democracy.
The Emma Lazurus plaque (it is not chiseled in the base), "send me your huddled masses" was added ten years later during the immigration peak of that age.

Americans need to remember that the statue of liberty is really a statue of a black lady which the french made in order to mock the US. The statue was a gift from france and the french hate americans and will do anything to make them look stupid, and usually the french win.

It was one of the first thing seen by early immigrants, however the illegal immigrants of today have a different agenda then the ones that came here so long ago.
