On 10 July 1989 Glasgow Rangers signed Maurice Johnston. One of the last bastions of Scottish Protestant sectarianism, Rangers shocked many of its supporters when the club, under manager Graeme Souness, signed Maurice Johnston from the French club, Nantes, for £1.5m. Johnston had not only played for arch-rivals Celtic, but was the first well-known Roman Catholic player to sign for Rangers in modern times.

10/07/1989.
Signed from Nantes days after celtic paraded him at parkhead as their new signing.
Johnston had to live under guard in Edinburgh because "the greatest fans in the world" sent him death threats for signing for Rangers, even when we had a charity match for ex old firm players, the celtic fans threatened a boycott if he played. Definately unbigoted those fans !!!!!!!

!! there's a theme going here. I dunno the date but I'd be very confident that Souness had the moustache. I can almost picture the interviews.
I gather Mo had to go live in Dick Place, Grange, Edinburgh shortly afterwards (where all the accountants and lawyers end up)
