Potty training 2-1/2 yo girl who is holding it?

My daughter who is 2-1/2 years old is at daycare now (my friend's house) and she just called me to tell me that my daughter has not gone pee-pee today at all. This is our third day into potty-training. We have half-heartedly tried before but end up giving into the diaper. But this time we are really sticking to our guns and not giving in. My daycare says my daughter has held herself and acted like she has to go potty but then nothing happens whenever she is put onto the toilet. She is put on the toilet about every 30-60 minutes for about 10-15 minutes each time. I'm very worried about the fact that my baby is holding her urine and not going. Can't this cause a bladder infection? What should we do? Do we cave and put her in a diaper? She is not crying or uncomfortable but I'm concerned about her holding her urine. Please, please any suggestions?

Thank you for such wonderful responses. Few things however. I don't really believe in spanking her for refusing to go potty. Not at just the first week. Secondly, she's not in trauma because she's very happy and laughing and dancing to "I'm a Little Tea Pot" at daycare so no trauma is involved. I believe she is very ready for pottytraining for a number of reasons, some of which she will tell us when she has to go and will demand privacy so she can poop in her diaper, wants to be changed immediately when she pees or poops, and lastly based on a test I took on Parent Soup which indicated she was ready. I was actually thinking 2-1/2 is getting a late start. Also, I do have a call into her pediatrician but haven't received a call back yet. We'll see what he says. Thanks for all the wonderful answers! Turn on the faucet while she is on the potty. Have you ever been at the sink rinsing dishes and then have to suddenly start dancing, because you have to go PEE. It helps to stimulate the urge to go.

Actually it sounds like you're doing all that you should be. But ya, my concern would be for bladder infections also. You could talk to her pediatrician or a urologist about your concerns. She may not be ready to be trained. My first I was a fanatic about training him at 2! It drove me and him crazy! Poor little guy! My 3rd I didn't even try. When she turned 3 I went and bought big girl panties, put them on her, and she had one accident and was then both night and day trained. My middle child had to wear undergarments until she was 6 when she grew out of them and we had no other choice but to let her wet her bed (with plastic covering on the mattress and doing sheets and blankets every day), and she didn't kick that until she was almost 14! I took her to the doctor for pills and nose spray to help her kick her body into not wetting, did everything possible!! Nothing worked - she just had to outgrow it. Your daughter might be holding it because she's scared of the toilet and the noise it makes when flushing. You could try taking her in with you when you go. Some kids feel like a part of them is being flushed and it scares them. Good luck!

I agree with the previous poster as far as frequency on the potty, but please don't punish your child for wetting her pants. Perhaps it is a power struggle, but it's the first week and I really don't think that a 2 1/2 year old would deliberately wet herself out of spite. Some children have a hard time having the urine and feces "fall" out of them rather than be smushed in the diaper. Positive reinforcement is key and punishment is really a detriment. My children did well wearing underwear; pull-ups and such are just glorified diapers in our home. Once your daughter can identify the feeling of having to urinate BEFORE it actually happens, she will be using the potty like a champ!! Good luck!

Let me let you in on something.... What your daughter is doing can lead to serious bladder and kidney problems that will need to be treated medically if she is continued to be forced. She is not ready. Give her her diaper back before she has to go through more trauma.
I am the mother of a girl who's had to have catheters and surgeries due to conditions my daughter was born with. Yes but the fact that she is holding is stating that she is not fully ready. Holding can cause infections that cause bad bad damage if it goes on too long. I would wait.. even if only a few more months. I just know what I have seen first hand. My daughter who is always happy too... is sad once she has gotten an infection...sad, sick, with IV's and tests that make even me cry.
