Has anyone ever found a new use for something else in the kitchen? For instance, my sun tea jug spigot started a leak, so I cleaned it out and now I'm using it to hold rice.

What innovative ideas have you come up with?

Ice cube trays are very useful. Fill them up with leftover soup. When it freezes, put the cubes into a plastic baggie. Whenever you are in the mood for some of that soup you can just take out the cubes you want, heat them up in the microwave and you won't have to re-heat the whole pot of soup again!

A lot of people place their items in the microwave with only a paper towel over it to control popping, etc.. The best way to microwave anything is to place it in a corningware dish with a glass lid. You retain moisture, reduce the cooking time, and avoid messy cleanups.

I did not come up with this but if you want to measure shorting or lard or margerine & you only have a measuring cup. for example if you need 1 cup of shorting, you get a 2 cup measuring cup & fill it to the 1 cup mark with very cold water then you put the shorting in til it reaches the 2 cup line & that should be 1 cup of shorting not packed in a measuring cup

not necessarily a cooking type tip but i hung a small towel bar underneath my kitchen cabinets and put hooks on it and use it to hang my cooking utensils from. it's right by the stove so i have everything within reach and it looks pretty cool too. find one with a round bar and the smallest size they have. look in the bathroom department for the bar and hardware for the hooks (i use s hooks).
