I know Halloween is all in good fun, but some costumes can be offensive to others. I know that real wiccans are not like the Wicked Witch and do not ride around on brooms. That's why I wonder: Are wiccans offended by the stereotypical "witch" costume (black pointy hat, robes) or by the shows on TV like Disney's "Halloweentown", where characters attend "Witch University"?

Naw, it's not offensive. These days there are more and more costumes for beautiful witches and nature goddesses, which is delightful.

Remember what Glinda said: "Only bad witches are ugly."

I think maybe wiccans are so used to be misunderstood they don't take it personal as long as no one is trying to burn us at the stake.

Most of the Wiccans and Witches I know don't think much of the "witch" costumes one way or the other, accept in amusement. The advantage of knowing the truth about what witches were and are is the ability ot be amused by the enormous amount of inaccurate information in existance on the subject. Most just laugh...they stopped being offended long ago...amd the ones that are are few and far between.

Because they put green make up on and warts on their witch noses, wear a black witch hat and black dress tied around the middle. With ugly brown boots.

They just don't look pretty. When my daughter was young. I made her wear this type of witch outfit. She didn't want to wear her nose when she went trick or treating. Then she didn't even want to go to trick or treat.

That night I had to be the ungly witch in my dreams flying around on a broom stick and I couldn't get the broom to come down until I woke up. I was so troubled by that dream.

Not only that, but an ugly feeling was around the witch outfit even hidden away in the closet. Until I decided to get rid of it.

I guess this was part of a 1 year break down I had years ago.

I think the reason the outfits are offensive is because of the bad spirits floating around them.

I'm a non-Wiccan witch, and I'm not offended. Halloween is all in good fun.

i am a Celtic Pagan and it does not bother me.

furthermore it does not bother me when people that play Live Action Role Playing Games and play as the fantasy Druid type made popular by the dungeons and dragons game.

the Witch stereotype, i believe has actually hepled us to remain a secret when we needed to be. everyone was so busy looking for broomsticks in the sky and green pointed noses with warts that they never had a clue that their neighbor was actually the feared witch.
the stereotype ie so fantastic that noone actually believes it today.
the only stereotypes that really bother me are the

all Witches are Goth.
the all Goths are into Witchcraft.

and the idea that Witches/pagans are somehow EVIL.

and these only really bother me because the people that believe them have never done one bit of study into the Goth sub-culture
or into Paganism or Witchcraft. they just believe whatever their pastor tells them.

They probably are but shouldn't be. Those things are made up and like said just for fun. I would hope that people aren't actually believing in things they show on a children's station. Don't get me wrong, I'm 23 and I could watch Disney all day but I know fiction from reality and would never take any of that stuff seriously. Anyone who is offended by things like that reeeeeaaaaalllllly needs to get a life.

Considering that image of witches has been around far longer than Wicca has existed, no.

Wicca is only actually, like... 60 years old.
