I am planning on getting a new LCD TV, and I have narrowed it down to the 40 inch Sony Bravia model number KDL-40S2400 and the 42 inch Sharp Aquos model number LC-42D62U. Both cost about the same, so don't base your decision on that. Some opinions would help! Thanks!

I would go with the Sharp, it has a higher resolution, it is 2 inches bigger, and it has one more HDMI input. It also has an illuminated remote, which is small advantage I guess. The only thing I can see that the Sony has that the Sharp doesn't are the video inputs on the side, but that is not that big a deal. The Sony is 20lbs. lighter if that is a concern, but overall I think the Sharp is the better of the two.

They both have similar specifications. Sony is a name brand, so it usually costs more than a Sharp. However, the Sharp LC-42D62U has a 1920 x 1080 contrast ratio, which is better than the 1366x768 of the Sony. Then again, Sharp's diagonal display size is 2" larger than that of the Sony. I would still go with the Sony because they usually cost more. Also, Sony products don't go on sale as soon as other brands, so I dont have to worry about finding the same thing at a cheaper price a few weeks after I buy it.

It is all about quality. Sounds simple enough. It's not. Your horizontal and vertical resolutions in ratio to size yields clarity. For example: 1078 x 780 in a 42 model 1078 from the bottom to top, and 780 is side to side pixel resolution. In other words, the higher the more concentration or saturation of color and the purer the picture will be. I own a Sharp 37in - it looks great because of 1368x720 (I think).

This is not the end. The next is just as important, and I have had interesting arguments over this. Refresh Rate. The faster is a lower number and the better. This means moving objects which IS VIDEO will be cleaner. Mine is 11ms

Next think of interoperability between components. These TV's are not cheap. I needed to be sure I could hook in my PC, Stereo System, HD, VCR's, etc. Next think of connections YOU WANT cool new stuff like HDMI - this cool cable contains HD Video and Stereo in one connect. Others like Fiber Optics etc.

One other thing apart but useful is sound. The Sharp had the best sound barre non! Since most of the use is (not showing off) sitting around catching a serial or what-not sound IS important!
