I don't know if you are looking for general safety information, or the answer to a DL test. I can tell you what I do. I check behind me quite often until someone pulls up and stops. Then I know I won't take the brunt of a rear end collision. When I'm not looking behind me, I am listening for emergency vehicles like police cars or ambulances. Last but not least, I am looking at the pedestrian traffic in the area so I know if I can drive away from the stop when the light changes. There are other things you can do in this situation, like scan your dash for engine info, or idiot lights. Check the fuel guage. If you are going to make a turn, make sure your signal is on. Drive right, live longer.
