Nope, it was the chinese who really kicked the US *** in the korean war. But south korea and Japan are a little jumpy right now and Big Papa Bush doesn't like his authority challenged so it could get interesting.

Mr. erudite, you talk like a man with a paper as*hole. You know very little about the history of the Korean conflict, if you did, you wouldn't talk like that. Were you even in the military? It doesn't sound like it. I'm going to fill you in on the facts rudi, just so people who read the answers will have some idea of a truthful nature. First of all, I'll admit that the U.S. made many mistakes, if you knew anything, the Korean conflict had it's beginnings in 1945, the U.S. hadn't yet finished mopping up from WWII. When the Japanese surrendered, the U.S. and the Soviet Union made their decisions on Korea, which had been in Japanese hands. That's when the 38th parallel was set, everything north of it was communist, all south wasn't. In the following years Kim il Jung promoted his plans to make the south communist as well. In June 1950 he launched a surprise attack on the south, the U.S. was caught completely off guard. The attack succeeded, the North Koreans pushed the south back into a small corner of the Korean peninsula around Pusan. From there, the war took many twist and turns. Within a year the U.S. and it's allies had pushed the communist miles beyond the 38th parallel, out of fear that the U.S. would attack China, Ma si Dong joined the fight. Although the communist were able to push the U.N. forces back, it basically became a stalemate. The peace talks resulted in going back to the 38th parallel. The war resulted in 54000 U.S. dead, roughly 8200 MIA....the communist(Koreans & Chinese) suffered 2,800,000 to 3,400,000 killed countless died from wounds suffered during the war. Almost no bridges remained in the north, 3/4 of all large buildings were destroyed, the country was in ruins, signs that remain to this day. The group that suffered the most, were the civilian population, a fact that is the fault of every nation involved. There is an underlying sentiment in North Korea that "precious leader" may be going to far with his taunting of the U.S. The Russians and the Chinese know this, it's their hope that a rebellion will take place before "leader" puts the country in even worse shape. Read what you wrote rudi, with the facts I;ve given you does it sound like America is worried about "fat leader"?.......LATER

They didn't beat us in the first Korean War, it was a draw and we would have had absolute victory if China had not intervened. People of this generation forget that you dont use one nuclear bomb in a limited fashion, once you open Pandora's box nations get obliterated. If you would read a History book you bumbling fool you would know some of this, and in 1950 we had just thoroughly defeated two great nations, and it wasnt 80,000 it was something like 1.2 million chinese, maybe its a little exagerated, but not that much by 1953. North Korea ONLY HAS A HANDFUL OF NUKES IT COULD DO NO DAMAGE TO US RIGHT NOW AND EVEN IF THEY COULD ONCE THEY SCHOOT THEIR FOUR OR FIVE THEY ARE DESTROYED. COMPLETLY! North Korea has a lot to lose something we like to call soverenty, Kim Jong IL is no Saddam or Hitler he is not a war lover he loves his elagant lifestyle.

It was only the intervention of China in the Korean war that forced UN forces back, also he Korean war was a draw, UN forces intervened to stop a North Korean invasion and maintain the 38th Parallel as the divide between the North and South, this is still (pretty much) the divide so it was a success. In short the US is not scared of North Korea, however it is a bit wary, which is sensible.

Here's what worries me about N. Korea.
That they have a working nuclear weapon capability, I have little doubt. That they have the missle tech to deliver the weapon to nearby nations, I have NO doubt. They MIGHT be able to reach, say Nome, Alaska.
That they might use it is what worries me. It's not the North Korean people. It's the nutcases holding the trigger that worries me. Most nations who've recently acquired the bomb understand the consequences of using it in anger. I'm not worrid that India and Pakistan will really start an all out, world ending nuclear holocaust. A bomb or two, lobbed by one side ot the other will likely make everyone sit back and say, "woah!" and calm down. It would scare them (and us) and probably cause them to stop.
But Kim Jon Il. I don't know about him. His insanity may make him incapable of understanding the consequences of his actions. He may believe that THIS country would not attack his if he actually launches a missle at, say, Japan. I mean, we have a treaty that promises that if anyone attacks Japan, we go after them. But I'm pretty sure that if he nukes Tokyo, we will not nuke N. Korea. I may be pretty sure, but maybe Kim is ABSOLUTELY sure.
So, what would we do. Pull everything out of Iraq and send it all to the Korean Peninsula? Don't think so. Lob a few cruise missles at some of his cities? I don't think Kim CARES! He is THAT crazy!
Crazy people scare me.

You do realize that the Korean War in the 50s was really just a small scale US-Russian war right? It involving the North and South Korea's was really just a side-note.
The US could take over North Korea very easily, the problem being, what do they want to risk? North Korea could easily destroy the South's water supplies, bridges, many civilians, food supplies, rails, roads and now, possibly destroy an entire city with a nuclear device.
So I guess the answer would be Yes, but not because they are scared of what NK can do to the US, but what they will do to the US's allies and the US's relationship with China.

We shot our virtual wad in both Afghanistan and Iraq...hell we fell all over ourselves patting wiener and Franks over the absurdly tiny US casualty count in the opening days (try running around major cities and entrenched defensive positions-thus avoiding heavy combat hence smaller body counts...they just forgot to plan any "stratergery "for maintaining the peeees....)then the one we were relatively successful with we let deteriorate after kickin butt and takin names is now reminiscent of Russia in there...we have no wad for true threats... but we sure do talk a piece of crap tough line...too bad he's all swagger and no actual substance...bring em on my arssse the only things this smirking frat boy ever finished were a few 40's and the standard 8-balls... he's running the country like his oil business..didn't that go belly up while he sat at the helm...yes doumarses he killed that as well

The USA isn't scared of North Korea's military. The USA is scared because North Korea has a long history of selling any weapon they develop to the highest bidder. The concern is over the possibility that they will sell a nuke to terrorists.
