It is caused by the herpes Zoster virus the same virus that caused chicken pox. The virus lays dormant and may never become active again. But is conditions are right and the immune system is compromised. Usually from stress an out break will occur usually in one area of the body the face and the torso most often

It is a throw back to the Chicken Pock virus that you probably had as a child. It may lie dormant all of your life and NEVER break out in "shingles".......then it may.
A lot of stress can cause them to breakout and I am sure there are other things.....or nothing needed for them to break out.
