He's bored, bored, bored! Hire a dog walker to come in during the middle of the day and take him for walks.

I understand your doggie problem. It's pretty common with most beginner dog owners so don't get uneasy. First thing to do is to buy a few pet fences so that your dog will soon learn where it should and should not go. Good places to pet the fences are:
the stairs
the family room(but when you're home, then you can take it off)
the kitchen(optional)
and any other places that are important to you or have valuables)
If you didn't buy the fences because you want to save money, then I consider you cruel to the dog. Either ways, the second rule is to buy it a pet carrier or so called dog carrier unless you have one already. You should sometimes put it in the carrier when it is naughty but you shouldn't leave the dog in the carrier all the time because then sooner or later then dog will be afraid of it and hate it. Once it hates it, it will always hate it even if you start to put food in it. To a dog, you are torchering it everytime you leave it in a carrier.
The third thing is to train it whenever you have time. You don't need to teach it hard things like shake hands or make it pull your skateboard, just teach it simple tricks like roll, fetch, run, stop, sit, stay and other useful training stuff. Just remember, you should feed it treats to keep it interested and focased. Once it gets better at it, then start to give less treats. Once you are done with the lessons that should be 30 minutes each, you should say nice things and play games with it or else the dog will feel like a slave. Oh and never say a firm"no", it won't scare the dog, but it will make you unhappy. Whenever you do anything like training or coming back from the mall, just always give your dog a long cuddle.

Longer walks will work. Go to Petsmart or PetCo and they'll show some of the more indestructable chew toys. Spray bitter apple on the thing you don't want him chewing on and because it smells and tastes bad, he won't touch it.

Get him a friend, either a cat or another dog. Why because of your bf though? Does he not like the dog or something?

Invest in some excellent chew toys....AND consider either keep him in a crate while you're gone OR sectioning off a part of the apt with baby gates. He's being destructive because you're leaving him alone all day. Some dogs get angry when they think they're being abandoned.

Also, please consider hiring a dog walker/pet sitter to check on him during the day. Or consider a doggy daycare if you can afford it.

Your dog is very bored. If you live in an apartment you need to walk a dog at leat 3 times a day. You need to wake up earlier in the morning and take him on a good long walk or if you have a dog park in your area take him there and throw the ball around. Get him good and tired. A tired dog is a well behaved dog.

Perhaps sign up for an obedience course.

Crate him when you are gone. It's not cruel, they think of it like their bedroom once they get used to it. They will cry at first, but you have to ignore them, they will stop. Also, provide plenty of chew toys like rawhides, bones, and Kongs stuffed with peanutbutter and treats. All dogs need to chew, it's normal and you can't stop it. What you can do is provide them with a proper outlet to fulfil their needs. Make sure you give him plenty of exercise (my dogs walk 1-2 hrs per day) in addition to chew toys. Some dogs like nylabones. I like to give raw beef bones. The marrow is nutritious and they last a long time (dogs can handle the bacteria from the raw meat). You can also get a spray to inhibit chewing on certain objects, but it sounds like you would need to spray the whole house! Get a crate, some chewies, and good luck!

I would recommend you buy what called bitter apple If you gave your dog an old shoe to chew on then its your fault, lol, try the bitter apple spray found in any pet shops, and make sure you leave no shoes around he can get to if he or she is a puppy, have chew toys around, and always always make sure your dog knows its a no no, I have 2 maltese and a pug.The pug I watch during the day till his pop comes and picks him up after work, none had ever chewed on shoes, the pug I watch is 12 weeks old,has plenty of chew toys he picks up one of the shoes bring it in his bed and just lies beside it,not sure cause of the size if it comforts him,but he does chew, you have to catch it all the time,or have no shoes around...

Crate the dog when you are not home for his own safety and that of your possessions. Crating is not cruel, dogs become used to crates and are very comfortable. I also agree to get him things to chew that are durable and take awhile to destroy. You also need to walk him and pay attention, play with him when you are home.
