I agree with OC Bujinkan. There are videos and books out there that teach Shaolin Gongfu and that do reveal a lot of insight into the movements. In the past 20 some years there have been a lot of people deciding to reveal things about the martial arts that are kept from the general public/non-practitioners. It's been come to realizes that it doesn't matter if someone hears or even knows, it's whether or nat they practice it that makes all the difference. Back to Shaolin Gongfu, again like OC Bujinkan said, you can mimic the moves and even know the application and purpose there is still going to be and underlining fact that there isn't anyone there to correct your mistakes. You could develop some bad habits. I would encourage you to do what you want to do. There are some very good instructional videos out there that take complete priority in actually teaching people and not some demonstration knock-off that's advertised as instructional. You should know that Shaolin Gongfu isn't one single style. It's actually a system consisting of several styles. There's Qi Lu Quan (seven animal fist), Luohan Quan (Arhat fist), Qixing Quan (seven star fist), Liu He Quan (six harmonies fist), Mei Hua Quan (plum flower fist), Taizu Chang Quan (Taizu's long fist)... there's several others but you get the idea. It takes a lot of discipline to learn a Chinese martial art. It's gradual, but there's a lot fo strength and flexibility involved and it does challenge you. If you want to get started without an instructor be sure to keep in mind that if you ever do you are going to have to work again from the ground up.
