I'm 13 and next spring i'm trying out for track, but i don't know if i need to get better and by how much. I can run half a mile in 3 min-3 min 30 seconds (my record is 3 min 14 sec) and my mile record is 8 min 42 sec. If i need to get better how many days a week do i need to run, how far do i need to run, and what time should i be aiming to finish?

depends on how big the guy is ....chaseing you,,,,ha ha

no really you are putting in to much effort in this first half mile,, you need to pace your self a little better,, so you can also get a very good last half mile... work on leg muscles,, and back muscles,,, but remember you are 13 years old,,, you body is still growing,,, do not over do it... and no matter what do not let any push you harder than what you fill you can do... and above alll have fun at running... when you are running for fun and enjoying it,,, you will almost feel like you are flying,,, that is so neat,, i love to run... one of my work habits is if i run half a mile forward,,, then i will run one fourth of a mile backwards,,,, really builds the muscles...

have fun enjoy

You don't need to get better. Track is for learnings and exercise and you don't have to win all the medals to be on the team. Your coach will put you in the area you are best suited for and you will learn to do better at track practice.

I don't recall being particularly good at track and probably finished near the back of the pack in most of my races, but I became a very fast player as I worked at it! Its all about doing your best.
