A bishop is an ordained minister and considered a successor of the Apostles.

A prelate is a ecclesiastical (church) governor over some geographical area or group of people called a prelature.

Most bishops are given a diocese to govern. The diocese is a prelature and the bishop becomes a prelate.

Not all prelates are bishops, for example abbots of monasteries.

With love in Christ.

Bishop is usually an ordained ordinary. A prelate can be a bishop, but it is a person with ecclesial jurisdition or an office of authority. Bishops can be prelates, but not all prelates are bishops.
