In its very basic form, it is a method of thought. Organization, if you will. Crowley termed it a filing cabinet.
It is much more and much less explainable than that. It's orginally a form of Judaic mysticism, put forth in the texts of the Zohar. it's supposed to be a roadmap of everything from the highest level of heaven to the deepest pit of hell, with our current plane of existence in the center--every sphere in the diagram is names for an angel/demon who's name is synonymous with a sin/virtue--it's used for meditation purposes

It's a fairly complex system...he Kabbalah is Hebrew mysticism, and there is also a variant used in European hermetic traition.
