BAGHDAD, Iraq - The two-month-old U.S.-Iraqi bid to crush violence in the Iraqi capital has not met "overall expectations," as attacks in Baghdad rose by 22 percent in the first three weeks of Ramadan, the U.S. military spokesman said Thursday.

The spike in bloodshed during the Islamic holy month of fasting was "disheartening" and the Americans were working with Iraqi authorities to "refocus" security measures, Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell said.

"In Baghdad, Operation Together Forward has made a difference in the focus areas but has not met our overall expectations in sustaining a reduction in the level of violence," Caldwell said at a weekly news briefing.

The gloomy assessment of the operation, which began Aug. 7 with the deployment of an extra 12,000 U.S. and Iraqi troops, was issued at a time of perceived tension between the United States and the nearly five-month-old government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

I can see where you are worried about the whole thing as it shows how deeply the problem was, and is rooted, and it is a first hand hand experience with the region.

The Iraq war is very unpopular right now when public opinion is easily swayed when the list of casualties go up. It doesnt help that there is another election in the immediate future. That sends fear in the hearts of the allies there too.

However, wars have never been won by public opinion. It is won by men and women of courage, the firm belief in the eventual resulting order that will turn that country around for future generations to come.

Have more heart and conviction. Read the name of the operation. "Operation Together Forward" means we will help you win your war.

Yessiree! Gas is cheap for my F350 pickemup truck with my 'support our troop' ribbons. Bush is killin' them heathens to make way for the second coming of our lord and savior sweet baby jebus, just like that jewish fellow says there on the FoxNews commercials. So what if we are losing record amount of troops, they're defending the freedoms that King george is stealing at home! Defending our rights against a country that did nuffin', but Sadaam was an ornery feller, and he needed to go for that there oil and stuff. God Bless the USA

How does the saying go. Animals are most dangerous when there nearly dead. Yes we will win. It takes a long time to make anything good happen. Nothing happens over night. I't may take another 5 years but we will not leave Iraq without finishing the job.

It is going YOUR way. This is what people like you have been working for - just like you did in Vietnam. You have given the enemy courage and strength to continue despite horrendous losses. Your words of cowardice and retreat give them hope. Your daily attacks on the President, the military, etc, read like their own propaganda.

So, you should celebrate - thanks to you and people like you, there are more deaths and casualties, more tragedies, and less hope in the world. Congrats! Such a fine job you've done.

Not as well as we would like. It would go better if it wasn't for support to terrorists from bush bashers. and turncoat democrats who supported it at first. Don't think terrorist supporters aren't reading this.
