I'm not a mathmagician, and I'm trying to save money on bread for daily sandwiches for my hubby's lunch. Would it be cheaper in the long run to make the bread at home or to continue to buy the bread at the store?

Depending on the type of bread you want, it can be either, however in the long run, store bought bread is much cheaper. The usual cost of a loaf of wheat bread is under $2, and that's for something other then the store brand. When you bake bread, it's not only healthier for you, since you know what's in it, but it tastes a whole lot better. however, you have to purchase yeast, flour, eggs and other ingredients plus figure in your time, labor and electric costs. I would bake bread when I had the extra time and money, but if money is an issue then buy it, we have a bread outlet near me that sells "day"old bread for about 50 cents a loaf and bread freezes well. Good luck. and I love the phrase mathmagician.. lol I too am not one.. :D

It really depends on how much you spend on a loaf of bread,,, if you buy the $0.59 loaf of bread, than no it is not cheaper, but if you are spending $3 plus on a loaf then you might really look into it. It is kind of expensive to buy everything in the beginning, especially the bread maker, but in the long run you will be saving money.

if you can save money by baking bread at home, it won't be much. If you then divide that by the time involved in doing so, you're making very little money per hour. Things get complex if, say, your bread is delicious or has some unique quality that you cannot get from a store.

Do it if it's a labor of love...

Depends...

Do you currently own everything that is needed to bake bread?... Pans, mixer, tools, etc.

Also do you already have all the ingredients?... Flour, yeast, etc.

And... Is your husband open to home made breads or is he a Wonder Bread kind of guy?

Another factor is the cost of running your oven and the value of your time.

With all that said. Home made and fresh always tastes better. It's almost as if you can taste the love that went into making it!

depends on how much your paying for store bought bread...
if say your going with a store brand and pay around one dollar a loaf then it's cheaper to buy then make.

however I like to bake on a clod winter day. if I have to pay for gas anyway the oven gives off enough heat to warm the downstairs so I'll bake six of so loaves then a roast and potatoes.
my energy usage/heating bill comes out the smae but I got good food out of the deal...

Well it all depends..because bread at the store does not cost much..but just think about it..if you go to the store and u have a list of ingredients u need...lets say each one is about $1.30..so u r rlly saving money if u buy it

If you can purchase your flour in larger quantities, like at a health food store or coop, and your yeast without buying those annoying little packets, then home-baked is cheaper. If you have to buy those little 5-pound bags of flour at the grocery store, you won't actually be saving anything (but getting better taste).

It's costs less to buy it at the store...unless you live in California-average cost $4/loaf.

Anyways, the amount of money you would save making bread is so insignificant ($4/month) that it's not worth the effort.
I wish I had the kind of life where saving $4 would make a difference.
