I put my dogs into their cages, just on the off chance they decided to have an accident or chew things up.

In the past I had dogs that I would let have the run of the house. My Lab would just sleep and when she was young my son would come from high school and let her out--when she grew old, the neighbour would let her out. My Mona, a mixed breed, had no problems with hanging around the house, too. I would come home to let her out. Well, Aine, our year old Wheaton, is a different story. I have tried letting her have the run of the house--Eee gads! The shredded throw cushions, wool skeins torn apart--you name it. I tried crating her but that was no good either. We have puppy daycare in our town and SHE LOVES IT--she gets to play and socialize with other dogs and by day's end is ready for her supper and a quiet evening.
It all depends on the dog, I think.

No, you buy a crate and crate train the dog. Then if it's a puppy, you need to figure a way to come home 1/2 way during the day to let the dog out.
Otherwise, another suggestion is buying a baby gate and dog-proofing a room, and blocking the dog in there with toys and water until you come home.

Buy a good sized cage so she can roam about in it. Put her bed in and some fresh water. You didnt say which breed she was. If shes small I would get a cage, if shes a Great Dane then obviously this isn't an option, just put her in a room where she can cause minimum damage to herself and her surroundings. Really though, you shouldn't have a dog if she's in alone all day.

I let mine have the entire house. She is trained to use puppy pads only, so she can stay inside all day and go potty too. I have one puppy pad in a spare bedroom so it isn't in the way. To keep her entertained I give her rawhide chews and a treat ball (found at petco or petsmart). That is how she is fed duing the week while I'm at work and it keeps her entertained for hours. I also leave the radio on, seems to make her happy.

If you trust the dog let it run around the apartment. I wouldn't trust my two dogs because it becomes a monkey see, monkey do and who can do it (whatever that may be) better. Is the dog house trained? Give it plenty of toys so it don't try to find household things to be toys.

I put my dogs in a large kennel or use baby gates to keep them enclosed in the kitchen or bathroom just on the off chance that they decide to chew up everything in existance or get sick.. then they wont be vomiting or using the bathroom in the house.
Now that my basset is older, she has free reign of the house since I know she won't chew on anything or get into anything harmful to her.

It depends on your dog!! I've never had a dog who wasn't allowed free run of the house once reliably house-trained and past the teething stage and not chewing on things (other than toys).

Toys, bones, training.
Get a kong, I heard dogs like them and it can keep them quiet. Bones are a good idea too; and tough ones. Dogs are small minded and determined, even if what they want will just lead them to have nothing ^^. For the most part, your furry little angel will sleep her little heart out. Just ensure she has something to do, and when you are with her, give her tons of love and attention.
