The Physics Answer: Kinetic (i.e. moving) and Potential (i.e. at rest)
The Environmental Answer: Renewable (i.e. we can get more of it) and Nonrenewable (i.e. once we're out of it, that's all we had, there is no more).

The two major types of energy are:
Kinetic Energy = 1/2 * m * v^2
Potential Energy = m * g * h
where,
m = mass
v = velocity
g = gravitation
h = height

Just to clarify as some of the answers above only refer to Gravitational Potential.
Potential and Kinetic are the two main types.
Kinetic energy is the moving energy of something. This could be movement in heat, sound, vibration, or generally movement.
Potential Energy is the stored energy giving something the potential move, due to it being in the vicinity of a force field. This force field may not necessarily be gravitation, but also electromagnetic, strong or weak.
