If you plan to go to China in spring, try to avoid May 1, the Labor Day holiday, which is a week long holiday. It is too crowded and you have to fight the domestic tourists everywhere you go! Try to go in late spring, say late May, since there are often Sand Storms in Beijing in early spring.

If you have extra time, I would recommend Xi'an, the city with epic history and Guilin, the most scenic city. These two together will take less than a week.

The train from Beijing to Lhasa started July 1 this year, and takes 48 hours. You will need to book ahead because it is very popular!

I am running my own tour company, specializing in customized tours to China: http://www.jiasdreamtours.com/ So if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

CITS , CYTS and CTS are 3 top travel agencies in China.
Yes, if you wish to go by train to Tibet from Beijing or Shanghai, the easiest way is to ask a help from the travel agency, since foreingers need a permit to enter Tibet.

China welcomes you!!

Yes I agree, go with a travel agency, save your self all the hassle especially if you are taking your family along. China travel Service (CTS) is very helpful, fast and convenient for any situations that I have come across. Shoestring Travel services is also great to help you with on line personal travel questions quickly. You can easily find both of these companies on the web.

Honestly, you are your best tour guide. Get the Lonely Planet Guide first, and use the dozens of websites to design your own trip. On site, you can hire local guides if you wish.
