I will NEVER understand why people insist on wearing black to such a happy occasion as a wedding.
To me, people who wear black to a wedding appear not to own any dress clothes and can't afford to buy them.

Additionally, I do not think it is an acceptable bridesmaid dress color. What an odd and unimaginative color to choose for you wedding party.

If you can, ask the bride or a member of the wedding party. Some weddings are formal and require formal wear for guests. Others can be completely casual- though, usually, dress code requirements like that are expressed in the invitation. But definitely ask the bride.

If you know for a fact black is one of the colors for the wedding (I'll be in one in September where we bridesmaids have to wear black), then don't wear black. It's not generally advisable to wear a dress in the color of the bridal party, if possible.

Black is traditionally a color you don't wear in weddings, because it was associated with grief; funerals. But, in the time we live in, people can wear whatever color, in most situations, as long as you're dressed up nicely! If you're very uncertain, why not ask someone like a friend of the bride?
To be safe, you could also bring a colorful scarf or other accessories to break the black:-) Oh, and wear good shoes so you can dance!

I personally would not wear a long black dress to a 2pm wedding. Do you know where the wedding is going to be? (ex: church, hotel, banquet hall, garden?) That might help in deciding what to wear. I think I would wear a dress that was versatile enough to wear to to the wedding and reception. For the wedding I would probably cover up with a sweater/wrap and then take it off for the reception to look more dressed up.

Yes. If you want to change it up a little, you can even wear a cute cardigan or blazer during the ceremony, and take it off for the reception. Either way, your dress is appropriate. Of all the weddings that I have been to, the majority of people wear what they wore to the ceremony to the reception, so you are not alone:)

Accessorize! Yes, you CAN wear the same black outfit but, for the solemn but bright exchange of vows. Suggestions: you can drape a colorful, oversized scarf attractively around it, or a soft and elegant mantilla (shawl) in a bright colour like turquoise or burgundy.

Alter the effect later with a change of accessories (perhaps more glitzy ones or a pair of fabulous earrings that will swing with you as you dance) for the reception and voila!

Have fun!

Wearing black to a wedding is acceptable, but make sure to accessorize you dont want to look like the grim reaper. You dont need to go overboard, a nice sash or some pretty pearl jewelry... you get the idea.
