I live in a luxury high-rise in Manhattan, and I have about 4 or 5 regular doormen who I am going to have to pay a bonus to come Christmas time. I need to start saving, how much should I pay each??

They don't always know my name but they do know which apartment I'm in, are always extremely friendly, and always greet me/ask how I'm doing.

Here is my (admittedly selfish) rule of thumb for this...

If they know my name, open the door, are always where they are supposed to be - I give $100 to them as I see them during the Xmas holiday (a card from me with the money).

If they simply open the door and have no clue who I am, I don't bother.

The building's management office started a Christmas tip pool to divide among our 3 doorman. My roommate and I contributed $40 each, so $80 from our apartment. It was divided evenly among the doormen in the end. Mind you, our doormen did not know our names and only pushed a button to open the door. So no personal service. When they helped us bring in packages or what not, we tipped them at the time of service. This was a few years ago and I no longer live in a high rise, so I think now we would do $100 to $120 for all 3 and have them divide it.

For crying out loud, they open the door! It's not brain surgery. Tipping is the biggest scam of the century. People already get paid to do their job, why is it assumed that they will do better if you tip them? They should already be doing their best to begin with or no job! And who decides which professions deserve it? Why waiters and hair dressers and not grocery store baggers or the kid at the record counter? They provide a service too!

Save your money, give it to someone in desperate need, a battered women's shelter, children's home, not some guy with a job that requires fewer brain cells than sleeping!

$100.00!!! What a crock!

Yes I know, I'm sure to p*ss people off! Too bad, free country and all!

I would say at least 50.00 dollars would be a acceptable gift. God bless
