You are REQUIRED to have braking, whether it's on a trailer OR being towed. Camping World has a unit you install in your car that pushes on the (towed vehicle) brake when the m/h brakes are applied.

Porterhouse, surge brakes on car trailers are hydraulic. A master cylinder applies the brakes when the trailer "surges" forward after the tow vehicle slows. All single car trailers have these type brakes, at least all the ones I'VE seen.

Maybe larger trailers are different?

YES!!! These are called surge brakes. When you apply the foot brake on your motor home, the relay activates the supplemental brakes on the trailer. Without the added stopping power, the trailer could be capable of pushing your motor home and cause a multitude of problems..... brake fade and failure, rough ride, if you are caught on a rain or snow slickened road, you may ultimately jack-knife your power and towed units. I am uncertain of the cost of these systems, but know that they are required and the money should be minimal compared to your safety and the safety of others.
