We live in a culture with a wide variety of beliefs and we value tolerance as a result. When people speak about their faith, they are often inherently criticizing other views. I give you an example, when I say Jesus Christ was the Son of God, I am inherently also saying that he was infinitely more important than Muhammed or the Buddha. It can't logically be true that Jews, Christians, and Muslims are all true, since they do not believe the same things. In our present culture, we have confused "you have a right to your belief and no other person has the legal authority can tell you that you are wrong" with "what everyone believes is true". When I say Jesus is the one true God and someone else says He isn't, we obviously can't both be right, and the fact that neither of us can force our view on the other as a matter of law doesn't change that.

This pluralist climate does make people a little nervous about sharing their faith, however, for fear that they will be seen as judging others or intolerant. Also, many people hold their faith at a very personal and intuitive level - if you asked them to explain why they believe such and such they would have a hard time explaining it in words and might not feel comfortable to explain something so intimate to them.

I think the reason people do not open up about their faith is fear of being judged. Religion is not a very light subject to touch on with many because they either are for it or totally against it. Some do not want to get in the battle of why they believe in their faith and don't want to hear what's so wrong with believing in their faith or religion.

For hundreds of years religion has always been something that many do not open up about because it wasn't allowed. If you were a certain religion or faith way back it could have gotten you killed for example the Holacaust. Hitler hated all Jews and tried his best to get rid of them all.

People hold back for a variety of reasons. For some, their religious beliefs don't really have much to do with their day to day lives, so it just doesn't come up. (I've worked with people for months without having any idea if they are religious.) For others, nothing could be farther from the truth. I love learning about other people's faiths and faith experiences.
