squats. But do them with light dumbells (hold them in your hands off to the side) and do a full squat (go below paralell, not just 90 degrees). This will be better for your knees and will force you to do lighter weight as the full range of motion is much more difficult than the typical parallel squat. There is no better leg excercise.

If you are looking to tone, do more reps, less weight, if you are looking to tone then the best type of cardio is High Intensity Interval Training. You go at sprinting speed for one minuite then take a "rest" or jogging period for the next minuite. Ideally you want to increase your sprint periods to twice your jogging periods. Do 20 minuites if you can, if not start with 10 and work your way up. Far far harder than a regular 30 minuite jog at the same pace (even the 10 minuite) and far far better for toning.

I'll bet your legs aren't as huge as you think they are, but I have achieved great results by bike riding (in your home or out in the world), and also those exercises where you lay on your side and lift your leg up and down. You can do it while you watch TV. Those exercises work on the outer thigh.

I like Denise Austin workout videos. I lost 15 pounds and really toned up working out with her tapes four to five days a week. She has workouts that focus on your hips and thighs.

Guys like thick legs. Why would you want to lose the size of it? Ok, but if you're serious about it and want to do it for yourself (which I can understand) then go to the gym and ask a trainer what you can do. Everybody's body is shaped differently so no matter what you read in books/magazines, etc. you should have a professional look at your body, and ask your questions to him/her. Good luck.
