Wow I am impressed. Five or six miles miles is a serious distance. Trainers are most peoples preferred footwear, they absorb some of the impact between your foot and the ground.
I have been told exercise increases muscle and muscle weighs more than fat, so exercise does not always equal weight loss. It might mean a weight gain--- a healthy weight gain. Muscle is considered good news as they will help improve your metabolism
If you want to lose weight I am sure you know the rules, eat sensibly and as far as possible leave chocolate, sweets, biscuits cake and every other item doctors give a red light to alone.
You are doing great things for your body---well done---keep it up---a you will deserve to have a healthy heart beating inside a slim body.
Signed jealous

Thats a great time for 5-6 miles, that averages into a 25 minute mile which is actually good. But if walking alone is not cutting it. You need to eat healthy low carb meals. You may want to buy some leg wieghts and exercise either with wieghts or cardio exercises. For a male the hardest part of the body to get in shape is the abdomen so do sit ups at least 3-4 times a week.

If walking is you're only form of exercise then it doesnt matter what weight you lose or not you're only going to tone up certain areas . You definitely need to be wearing a shoe with plenty of cushioning for the sole and arch support but well done you for doing so much

Hello Dan,
Just go and get a good pair of walking shoes. Flippin eck if you have just started walking and are doing that much then i reckon you shouldn't worry about your weight, just carry on doing what you're doing. It's going to make you fitter how ever much weight you lose. I hope you eat correctly though, otherwise you might get really tired and then be to tired to walk. I think you're doing really well. The shoes as you say, are important. And you get what you pay for.

That's very good. ht average person can walk 4 miles in an hour so you're on the nose pretty much. The recommended amount is 30-60 mins a day

I think that's great. I am 66 years old and do about 7000 to 8000 steps a day . Tonight at my weight watchers meeting I was told that to eat a small bar of chocolate without putting the weight on i need to do at least 20,000steps a day . Soul destroying isn't it

Curious to see the answers to this; I walk about 5 days a week (brisk pace short walks on the weekdays and longer ones on the weekend) and I've actually gained weight!

The best way to lose weight is a properly controlled diet followed by sensible eating habits. Walking unless you do a lot or even exercise may tone up your muscles but wont lose much weight for you

Find what ever walking shoe works for you, if your feet don't hurt when you are through your shoes should be OK. find a heart rate target chart and check your when you are walking to see if your heart rate is within your range. Its not how far or fast you go it keeping your heart rate at its range for 20 minutes or more. The distance you are doing is great , just check to see if it's at the right heart rate

i think you are definetely walking enough. you may add some light aerobic exercise while walking like carrying light weights or stretching your arms.
look for jogging walking shoes section when you go to a store. shoes with cushion at the soles will be helpful.
check your heartbeat while you are walking. there is a range you want to be at in order to lose weight.
good luck
