the Bible says to honour and respect your parents. it does not mean that if your an adult that you can not live by your own standards and principles. you would show respect for who they are and what they have done. but you do not have to follow them blindly. In order to be all things to everybody, one can only follow Jesus example who was true to himself and his father first.

The 5th Commandment says honor thy father andthy mother that your days will be long in the land your God gives you. That is the first commandment with a promise. God wants you to honor your parents, that means to treat them with respect and consideration and to treat them honorably. Of course you as an adult don't have to "obey", but why would you not? Your parents are not going to tell you to do anything that would harm you.,

Actually, the Bible says to "honor" your parents. This means different things at different points in your life.

When you are a minor, "honor" implies obedence.

When you are older, it seems clear from Jesus' teaching that "honor" means making sure that your parents are taken care of in their old age.

No matter what the age, "honor" means "respect".

I don't think that you have to obey your parents once you move out of the house and are paying your own bills. I do not believe that there is any church that teaches this.

You must honor your parents. Honor is to show respect and this has nothing to do with age. To obey is for a child and for an adult is to leave father and mother and continue honoring them.

If you actually READ it, it says to HONOR your parents. Yes, as a child that means obey. And of course you respect them as an adult. But *as* an adult, it means more that you are to TAKE CARE of them as they age.

At the age of 40 Isaac still obeyed his father Abraham. So you see it does not matter your age, your parents do not cease to be your parents just because you became an adult.

You are correct that the bible says to obey your parents, that appears in Ephesians 6:1 but the scripture also says in yahweh(god). the whole scripture is "Children obey your parents in yhwh, for this is right" if your parent tells you to lie than you must disobey them because that is not of yhwh. no matter how old you are you must obey them unless they are wrong. the bible says give honor where honor is due. no matter how old you get you must remember they brought you into this world and you need to respect them.
