Wow this is a strange kitty! Possible reasons could be something is stressing him out --other pets or small children in the house? He might feel safer in the litter box. Also, If he hasn't been neutered, this would also contribute to his deviant behavior.

Cats and kittens like to curl up in small spaces and perhaps the litter box is a tempting size. Try offering your kitten a kitty bed, a cardboard box, or a laundry basket and see if he uses those instead. I would also suggest moving hisfood bowl away from the litter box if it is near it - he might not want to go to the bathroom near where he eats.

Good luck !

If it's one of those covered litter boxes with a roof and walls, he may just feel safer in there so decided to sleep in it rather than poop in it... I'd take the top off and see what happens. Otherwise I don't know what to tell you... call the vet maybe? See if they have any ideas... I've never heard of this before!

My daughters cat did that. It drove us crazy. You may need to get a new litter box and try again.

Firts of all, check for urinary tract disease. have his urine analysed for crystals and bacteria. Peeing outside the litterbox is a sign, and my cat did lie in the litterbox when he had it. Your cat is very young, but he could have a urinary tract infection. if you see him trying to pee but straining, you must go to the vet ASAP.
