I avoid projection TVs like the plague. I've never seen one that can match the brightness or clarity of an LCD or Plasma TV. If you are in a brightly lit room, the projection ones, including DLP always seem kind of dim. That's why when you are in the store, they always make sure the lights are dimmed in the area where the projection TVs are.
I personally prefer the plasma. The colors seem warmer and more vivid. The display is closer to a conventional picture tube TV then an LCD or projection. Plasmas also seem to offer a wider viewing angle. If you're off to the side, Projection and LCDs suffer, but plasmas do just fine.
As far as Plasmas go, I've seen some really sweet looking ones from Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer.
Just some things to keep in mind when buying. First, make sure you know what resolution it displays. Many are HD, but do not show 1080i, only 720p. Make sure you know whether it's got a built in HD tuner or not. Also like I said, spend some time looking at them from a angle, so you know what the picture looks like if you aren't sitting directly in front of it.
I'm still waiting to take the plunge. When I can buy a good quality 50" Plasma HDTV for around $2,000, I'll take the plunge.
