what color, but snickers
With our cats, we weren't trying to prove anything on a literary level. What we wanted were names that wouldn't embarrass us if we had to yell them outside. That ruled out anything like “Fluffy Meowington.”
Lizzie (Elizabeth Bennet) was named by Pat -- a fan of Jane Austen -- with some pride and some prejudice. Nicholas got his name because we adopted him close to Christmas, but we forgot that one of our next door neighbors already had a son with that name. We got a few funny looks from them the first time we called Nicky the cat while Nicky the child was outside.
I took responsibility for naming Kelly, and while that name is usually given to females, I think of it as the surname of a friendly, mellow Irish ginger tom. To avoid gender confusion I usually refer to him in public as Mr. Kelly. Even so, when the Big Guy goes to the vet and Dr. P. makes a comment about how cute "she" is, it doesn't seem to bother Kelly, so why should I let it bother me?
The name of Caitie-Belle was also my idea, and although I like it because it’s unique, time has shown that it doesn’t fit her personality. With the best of intentions, I saw the beautiful little calico in her carrier at the adoption day and thought she should have a nice, sweet, feminine name. I should have realized that her backstory indicated she was a tough survivor and a Calico Diva in training.
Anything but fragile, she could have been named “Maggie the Cat” after the character in a Tennessee Williams play. I can also see her as “Eliza Doolittle,” like the Cockney flower girl in My Fair Lady. Or maybe “Mehitabel,” the "toujours gai" stray and confidant of Archy the cockroach in stories written by Don Marquis. Perhaps all our girl needs is a different spelling -- like “Caitibel”? Still, even if I didn’t give her a good name, Pat and I were glad to give her and her housemates a good home.
Stephen Foster wrote many of the popular songs in 19th-century America. Examples include Oh! Susanna; Camptown Races; Old Folks at Home [Swanee River]; My Old Kentucky Home; Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair; Beautiful Dreamer. I didn't know it when we named our cat, but Foster wrote the music for an 1863 song called "Katy Bell." And since this is the Internet, after all, you can listen to it, and if you're as interested as I was, even find the sheet music and lyrics. Prince Muddy Paws is the name of the blogging cat at bloggingcat.com. He's a CFA Registered Doll-Faced Seal Point Himalayan Persian, and a handsome one, too.

Where I grew up, carbonated soft drinks went by the name "pop", but where I live now, they're called "soda". You can learn more about the U.S. geographic distribution of those names and more at The Pop vs. Soda Page.

I don't think you can just have a name ready to go. Cats have such unique personalities and traits that when you name them it should be something that fits with it. Also with the varying colors and patterns they have, you wouldn't want to have picked out the name snowball and get a calico cat, or fluffy and get a short haired cat. Just go with the feeling you get when you pick out the animal.
