its your grandmothers personal view. until religion became organized their was no legal form of getting married. Joseph went and took Mary to his home to be his wife. that was the public declaration that they had become man and wife. Gods view has not changed on how he sees a man and wife. its a couple living together in all ways that makes them that nothing more nothing less. Jesus said give to Cesare what is Cesar's give to god what is gods. The first century christian did not preform marriage ceremonies, but it was a requirement of the legal system at that time. Just like we have to today to satisfy the civil law

No, you are not a bad person. Many people get married by public authorities because they have no religious affiliation or are not comfortable with a church ceremony. Your grandmother grew up in a different time, but nowadays, getting married outside of a religious setting is more common and accepted. If you are happy in your marriage, who cares what anyone else thinks, its your life to live.

You are not a bad person if you dont do what this world wants you to do. Inreality one is married to a person once they lay together (have sex) and share their life with eachother. What difference does it make if you singed a paper that said so or if some pervert priest so called "blessed" your marriage. Marriage is a commitment. not a paper or a ceremony. If you in your mind and heart know you are married to that man.. then why all the hustle... you are a good person for staying married to him without the stupid paper or church ceremony.. you are a great woman

No, don't give it another thought. Being married 'in the church' is part of the belief of Catholics and maybe Jews, etc. It doesn't come from the Bible. Just try to be nice to your poor, dear, ol' grandmother who obviously loves you very much, and do your best to keep the faith as well as the peace in the family by not arguing with her. God bless.

This is a very "gray" area. By Biblical standards you are in "sin" because God doesn't recognize marriage unless its coveted by a Priest.

Only religious institutions can claim this to be any type of sin. If you remove religion from the equation, then no, its not immoral.

You're not hurting anyone.

No, of course you aren't. But I don't think your grandmother is capable of understanding it, if she's spent all of her life thinking differently. When she was your age, very few people dared to do what you did, and many people do now.
