Your best bet is to rent a car from Ben Gurion airport. There are many companies to choose from. I would not drive north to Jerusalem via the Palestine territories...duh!. Go south...towards BeerSheba. Visit the home of Ben Gurion. See the largest crater in the world--The Mitzpeh Ramon. Then travel east, towards Arad, The Dead Sea.

Le Meridian is a short distance from King Herod’s 4000 year old mountain fortress on the Masada--the sunrise from atop, is not to be missed. The Qumran Caves, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found and the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve are also near by. Renting a car will give you the freedom and flexibility to see and do so much more at your leisure.

Security is not a problem, so long as you stay within Israel and drive an nice looking car with Israeli plates. Many soldiers work as tour guides for an excellent, lost cost alternative to get you from here to there. Phone your hotel for arrangements.

It's the national bus company website in English.
There are 2 ways to go to En Boqeq in the dead see:
1. From Jerusalem passing through the Occupied Territories.
2. From Be'er Sheva by-passing the Occupied Territories.

You may be lucky enough to be blasted there, if the right amount of explosive was used by the suicide bomber.

just make sure that it is bulletproof (there are many gunmen there), and can run fast (missiles may hit at any time)

Public bus is really bad choice, there may be suicide bombers

And--have fun in israel
