I'm living in a homeless shelter, & debt collectors are hounding me for money I don't have, & I heard that it's illegal for them to do that. I told them I was homeless. What does a homeless, poor person look like paying debts? I'm living in a homeless shelter, where they won't let me work, so that they could put me into affordable housing.

*I'm on my friend's computer. That's how I have internet access.

Ask your friend to help you type up a "cease and desist" letter and send it to your creditors. That will stop the harrassment.

They can't sue you if you don't own anything. And can't find you to serve you court papers if you don't have a home.

Ignore them....try to get your life back in order.

You are suppose to find another homeless shelter in which they let you work. You need money to pay off those dumb things. Go ask your social worker or someone who can help.

It's not illegal for them to ask you to pay them
but there are laws to protect you from harassment.
each state has it's own laws, see if the shelter
staff can help you find more information.

Illegal? No. Immoral? Yes.

You should consider filing bankruptcy -- you can probably get legal aid to do it for free, and that will stop the harassment and wipe out the debts.
Good luck to you as you try to rebuild your life.

It's not illegal and it's not immoral. Get a job and pay your debts.
