Depends on the issue. If the problem is managing your emotions and you have borderline personality, then DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) has a component to it which involves managing mood swings.
If the problem is Bipolar, then medication is the best bet.
If the problem is PMS, well... I eat chocolate... lol
Best of luck.

I was once diagnosed as bipolar so you should guess that I have had so many mood swings until now...
To prevent them without medication is hard but not impossible.
1.Change your physical environment.Be choosy about the places you go,the people you get in touch with.
2.Don't take alcohol or take it very seldomly in very small amounts.
3.Meditate.
4.Omega 3 (concentrated fish oil) worked a lot for me.
5.Vitamins B complex(especially B12)is a very vital substance in fighting stress.
6.Move.Do sports daily.Doesn't have to be heavy sports just move.
7.Watch your diet.
8.Watch your sleeping schedule.

I think its physical and mental. You gotta monitor the thoughts that go through your head. A lot of the time your imagination will run away and think a situation is actually worse than it is in reality. If soemthing is upsetting you its good to write down what it is thats causing you grief and then ask yourself is it really as bad as all that? Most things arent as bad as they seem when brought out into the cold light of day and the bad things that you imagined would happen in all probability wont happen. Thas the mental side. As far as the physical aspect of your moods......try not eat so much junk food coz processed food contains lots of chemicals that f u c k with your brain chemistry.Andalso the sugar will unbalance your blood sugar levels which will also mess with your mood. Excercise is really good for balancing things out

See a qualified Medical Doctor and perhaps either medical intervention or psychological help will level you out - I have been depressed often and I was put on a simple medication which has given me a lot of new hope and I feel more positive - try this if the MD is willling.

I do not believe it is possible. I have never seen, nor heard anyone who has a "real" mood swing be able to function effectively without some type of psychiatric assistance. I could be wrong, as I don't know everything. Research it yourself and then let everyone here know what you find out!!

If you have cyclothymia, you may be able to get away with a controlled environment (sleep, stress etc) and omega-3 supplements. If you have bipolar disorder, then you need psychiatric intervention and medication.
