Give yourself some time. I was on meds for 20 years. They just covered up my problems while lining the doctors pockets. Your Doctor is right! Get back into your routine and pick up a few good hobbies. Too many doctors are prescription happy and it sounds like you have one who actually cares about you and not your money! YOU CAN BEAT THIS!!!!! I did!! I was even told I would NEVER recover from my depression and now I am. Without medication. It really makes one think doesn't it?
The Best of Luck!

I'm almost 20, and I've been taking anti-depressants for almost 3yrs. They really do help, but the key is to find the right one for you. There are many different kinds and they can all affect you differently. Your doctor can usually prescribe one that works pretty well as long as you're honest with them and you go in for a visit. I do recommend that you try other things first. It's good to see a counselor because that helps tremendously. Excersize works wonders too because you can work off your stress and it makes you feel better about yourself. I would wait on the meds and try other things first. I've been diagnosed with clinical depression, so that's why I take medication. But do what you think is best for you.

Have you had a REALLY THOROUGH physical exam, especially blood work for thyroid or other endocrine system problems? It is ESSENTIAL that you do that before even considering taking antidepressants. What did your doctor say was the cause of your alopecia? That is a very common symptom of thyroid problems, which can also sap your energy and make you feel depressed. And make sure they do a FULL thyroid panel, not just TSH, T3 and T4.
You may have to seek out an endocrine specialist who is open to the idea of alternative treatments. A friend of mine had similar problems and she went to four or five doctors before she finally found one who was willing to listen to her.
I am not against antidepressants, I take them myself, but I think they are WAY overprescribed in our society. If you have a really THOROUGH physical exam and everything comes out normal, THEN consider antidepressants.
Good luck!

The meds have helped me a lot!! I feel like I can get up and move to do the things I used to do. I feel like I have enough energy to go and I sleep much better. That makes all the difference there.

In a period of my live I felt very down due to a family bereavement. After some months i went to see my doctor because i was getting worse. In particular I had trouble sleeping.I prescribed me Zoloft for 3 months and I must say it worked well.It nothing that makes you feel better or happy, these drugs just help not get worse.Go and see your doctor, they won't give you anything you do not need.

I was on depresson medications on and off for years. It helps, but the problem is under laying,in some cases, some it is a chemical imbalance.Drugs only hide the feeling sometimes.Be careful. Be honest with yourself, ask why you feel this way?Hope you the best!

My mother has been clinically depressed for some time now. Medications have helped her tremendously. However, it took a several months to find which medication worked best for her. She went out of her way to find a psychiatrist that would also prescribe medication. Her psychiatrist and physician have worked well together to develop her best course of treatment.

Medication doesn't help me. They don't make your problems go away. You will become very dependent on the drugs, & the medicine will make you MORE depressed & sleepy. My dperession caused me to have Tourette's Syndrome symptoms.

I don't take medication for my depression because my body doesn't like it.
I have depression, but I cope with it by fishing, golfing, video football and watching Sanford & Son.
