Do you think grey would represent more sophisticated technology than black on modern equipment?

In my opinion, and it's just an opinion, no. Seems to me black is so classy and gray is so wishy-washy. I've noticed a trend toward gray cars recently, and I hate it. I actually saw a Nissan 280Z in gray. They shouldn't even make that car in gray.
