I have learned from bad experience that the stink comes from multiple cats. One or two cats don't stink if you are very dilligent about cleaning out the litter box and not letting stinky food sit around. Also, if you don't get a male cat neutered before six months old he will spray urine all over your house which smells worse than anything I think I have ever smelled. Cats are fairly clean animals but when you have multiple cats they compete for territory and will mark their territory with urine. One cat should not be bad just keep her litterbox in an area that is away from where you might have company and scoop it at least daily if not 2x a day and get her/him spayed/neutered and you should not have smell.

My mom had a cat with some sort of disease, I can't remember the name of it, but all it meant was he had bad breath. he would jump on people's chests and breathe on them, and if you try to move him he'll be there for an extra 5 minutes. lol
Older cats on regular cat food like whiskis, 9 lives(cheap stuff you get in the supermarket) have a tartar problem. go to a pet food store , or petsmart and get a better quality food like nutro, chicken soup for the cat lovers soul, or the really high end food like wellness. there more expensive but there made with humane grade meats and no by-products(feet's and beaks) and start feeding him wet food everyday, even a quarter of a can at breakfast if fine. that's what we feed our cats and our vet says our 18 and 11 years old cats have fantastic teeth with no tatar. There is also dental cat treats called greenies. there all natural and will help his breath

That is common for older cats (animals in general). Their digestive system is aging, and a teeth cleaning may be in order.
Change the diet to a senior cat formula, a better food like Natures Recipe. That will help too.

Has your cat been outside? They can get horrible breath when they start hunting mice and other things... It might just be that he needs his teeth cleaned. There's no way to really tell unless something drastic changes about his behavior.
Unfortunately, I think you're going to have to pay for the vet visit on this one...

The bad smell is a sign of something wrong.
He most likely has a rotten tooth in his mouth. You need to get him in for a checkup. He probably needs a cleaning and possibly an extraction if he has a bad tooth, or teeth.
