Why so many thumbs down when you all seem to have so much to say? This is not meant as an attack on your lack of faith it is just somrthing I was curious about since so many non believers spend so much time in the religion and spirituality section.

Most Atheists used to be religious and tried sincerely praying, myself included.

I honestly waited but just didn't delude myself that I was hearing an answer.

Still waiting

Yup..grew up in a christian household and prayed every day. Not a single thing I prayed for ever came true that I can recall...and no, I didn't just pray for selfish things, I prayed for others too. I prayed for god to heal my grandfathers stomach cancer...my grandfather was a devout christian, church elder...but you know what, myself and the whole family and church congregation prayed, and he still died a lingering painful death.

I also tried rubbing a rabbits foot, wearing my lucky T-shirt....results were the same.

Prayer is superstition...the "still small voice" you hear is your own brain.....and my brain said to me, "stupid, you are wasting your time"

There has never in the history of praying been a prayer "answered" that couldn't have happened by random chance, coincidence, or the natural laws of the universe. So called "answered prayers" are just what psychologist call Confirmation Bias, that is the tendency to remember a positive response, and forget all the negative ones.

Try praying for something that science says is impossible...like perhaps moving a mountain....all of you, every christian in the world. What do you think will happen? Nothing. Yet Jesus says if you have faith even of a mustard seed, and pray sincerely, god will answer that prayer. He doesn't say "sometimes god will answer NO"....look at the scriptures....it is quite clearly stated in many places ( Matthew 7:7, Matthew 17:20, Matthew 21:21, Mark 11:24, John 14:12-14, Matthew 18:19 and James 5:15-16...just to name a few) Read these verses, in context or out of context, it doesn't matter...there is no quibbling...Jesus says anything is possible with prayer. Not some things, not depending on what kind of a mood god is in ...ANYTHING.-

Try praying for a healing....no, not something hidden like "cancer", but something real obvious and incontravertible, like say an amputated leg. Has god ever regrown an amputated limb back? Unless you are a salamander or a starfish, the answer is NO. What does god have against amputees? Are amphibians and echinoderms more precious to god than his human creations?

Yes I have and with a sincere heart. I begged for something, anything to show me him. But nothing happened....

I think the real question is for those who do believe in God, ever stop praying and start doing? If all those prayer warriors stopped sitting on their knees, crying, begging for god to help others, if they just stopped and got up to lend their own hands to try and better this world... can you imagine the change that would make???

Most people who have tried (Abrahamic) prayer have prayed to Yaldaboath, the Demiurge who created this world, but not the universe. Many Pagans prey to a part of the Ori, who does answer prayers, but only when specifically called upon. The Demiurge is prideful, genocidal, and deceitful and is proud to see so many do so much wrong in the name of "God."

I was raised in a fundamental, evangelical, charismatic Christian household. Until I was about 16 or 17, I believed fervently and blindly. It was about that point when I realized a large number of things I'd held to be true weren't.

So yes, I have tried your side. I even tried the "asking for confirmation", because leaving what I'd been brought up was a painful experience--for a long time I didn't want to trust what my logic told me. I've been there, and it didn't work for me.

Once in my entire life, I prayed wholeheartedly. The only thing that happened is that an old boyfriend called to find out if I was ok. Apparently he started having dreams that I was asking him for help.

Damn, it never occurred to me - is my ex-boyfriend god? lol

A few other times when I prayed, either things turned out the way I wanted them to, or they didn't. No clearcut winner there.

Have I ever done exactly what you're asking? No. By the time I began doubting there was a god, I had no interest in praying.

why shouldn't want or expect immediate results. Look a person who doesn't believe needs immediate results right. So if you ask for confirmation, why shouldn't that request be granted. It's almost like the christian philosophy is wait. wait on what. when a person needs help they need it now not later.

When I was a child I prayed. Now I know that prayer does absolutely no good at all. What exactly do YOU pray for? For god to change his plans? For someone to get better? For someone to find god? What abou ttheir free will? What about god's plan for them?

1.) I was raised in the church and so prayed every single day and NOTHING HAPPENED.
2.) Could you please ask the most beautiful pink unicorn to touch you spiritually if it is real? No? Well, why not? Because it's illogical to ask something that you don't think is real to prove its reality. Surely, surely you can see that.

Yep. And I came up with an absolute certainty that God is not how I was told he was in church.

Now I'm a Taoist.
