mainframes can, if programmed correctly, handle hundreds of users. I (and many other engineering students) first started programming on a timeshare system running BASIC at UC Irvine in the '70's. At that time, there were lots of multi-user systems around in universities and businesses.

There is no true or false to this question. It is dependent on the hardware in use. Capacity is related to the pipeline (bandwidth and other factors. Buss speed, etc.
