An albino is a person suffering from a lack of melanism which in turn leads to an absence of normal pigmentation. The absence of pigment is observed in the body covering (skin, hair, and feathers) and in the iris of the eye. The blood vessels of the retina show through the iris, giving it a pink or reddish color, and the eyes are highly sensitive to light. Albinism is inherited as a Mendelian recessive character in humans and other animals. Through experimental breeding, races of albinos have been established among some domestic animals, e.g., mice, rabbits, pigeons, and chickens. Albino animals are sometimes held sacred, for example, white elephants in Thailand and white cattle in India. The presence of an excess of black pigment is called melanism.

An "albino person" is better termed as a person with albinism. Many of the responses here are only partially correct. There are several different types of albinism. Some have oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) so they lack or are devoid of pigment in their skin, hair and eyes. Thus producing a person with white hair, pale skin and pinkish eyes. Others have ocular albinsim (OA)thus lack pigment in their eyes. These people may have normal hair and skin color. Both types are very sensitive to light (if they are lacking pigment in their eyes [thus having lighter color eyes], there is nothing to filter out the light). Light is much brighter to people with albinism than to normally pigmented people. Also, People with albinism often have some degree of pendular nystagmus - a rapid back and forth movement of their eyes. This effects the clarity of their vision. The movies depict the assassin as the"evil albino" - A person with albinism would make a lousy assassin as their vision is poor!

And unlike the response from littlekitten555 - albinism does not result from incest. I am married to a man I have no blood ties to and we have a son with albinism.

It is lack of pigment in the skin and hair. It is not only humans. White rabbits are mainly albino and tend to have red eyes. It also seems to go hand in hand with deafness. Albino dogs are usually also deaf.

A person who lacks pigmentation normally present in hair, skin and eyes. The person may look different to many other people with pale skin and very blond/white hair. Also as they lack pigmentation in the iris the eyes may appear to have a reddish tinge.
They are regular people who have slightly unusual looks basically.
