With the east coast i am guessing Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane? Make sure you see the Harbour Bridge and Opera House in Sydney, the reef and rainforest in Cairns and the penguins and Great Ocean Road in Melbourne.
The Australia Zoo is in Brisbane but don't go there for the sake of it because of Steve Irwin, go there to see the animals. I think he would of rather people visit because of them not because of what happened to him.
If you have time you could also try to go to Uluru as well.

It all depends on which part of the east coast, it is quite extensive from the top end to Melbourne.
I do agree with the previous suggestions, but it really depends on what you are really interested in. There is so much to see and do.
This does seem to be a non-answer but I live in a tourist region in the outer east of Melbourne, we have wineries, great food places, world renowned Healesville Sanctuary, great bush areas, great cross cross country skiing (winter of course), water sports.
Then not that far away Great Ocean Road in one direction and Phillip Island with the penguins in another direction.
There are fantastic places throughout Australia to visit
Try this site perhaps:

My opinion would be no matter where in Aussie you are going, go to Australia Zoo and pay tribute to the memorial of Steve Irwin. Even if it is on the opposite side of the country of where you are visiting. Like you said this is a trip of a lifetime and that would be where I would want to go.
Well I didn't mean go JUST because of Irwin. I meant to pay tribute to him as in going for the animals and learning about conservation and stuff of the such as a way to pay tribute. Sorry if I was misunderstood, should have made that clear the first time.

Start at the north and do Hamilton Island, Whitsundays, then go to Daintree rainforest....Must snorkel and explore at the Great Barrier Reef!, go to Frasier Island..it is very cool.....go down to Byron Bay....then to Sydney and explore the city.....and inland to the Bue Mountains....then down to Jervis Bay (has the whitest sand in the world) and see the fairy penguins and go on a whale cruise...then finally down to the southern coast and travel the Great Ocean Road and see the twelve apostles in the ocean......
But of all, the tropics and Great Barrier Reef.

Well I live in Cairns and I would definitely recommend visiting here. There is something for everyone. There's the reef where you can dive or snorkel. Great beaches where you can sit back and chill, learn to kite surf, jet ski, para sail or get a tan (beware of stingers in the summer months). You can be adventurous- bunjy jumping, white water rafting, sky diving, motorbike trail rides, gokarting. Or you could sit back in one one our beautiful resorts by the pool sipping cocktails. We have world class golf courses, helicopter scenic flights, sail boat cruises, fishing charters, Australian wildlife zoos, crocodile farms and the list goes on. There is something here for everyone. There are heaps of places to stay from budget to 5 star, great places to eat, places to party and good people to meet. Have fun where ever you may roam.

Dont focus too much of your time in Sydney (as thats what many do and they end up being disappointed). 3 or 4 days MAXIMUM is enough for Sydney.
Visit Melbourne for its great nightlife, shopping and eateries.
Visit Queensland for beautiful beachs, theme parks, great barrier reef, rainforests etc.
