...just because that book seems to anger christians so much, even though its fiction. Maybe they get mad because they know deep down that their Holy Bible is just as fictional.

Any other novels or short story collections you think should be in the running for the New Holy Bible? Lets hear suggestions...basing a religion on a bunch of myths and historical fiction seems to be all the rage!

More than likely it will happen. Remember a group of "Colorful" people got together a few years ago and came up with the Star Trek religion. That was crazy enough to tell me that people will buy into anything.

No, I think it's more about the DaVinci Code popularizing another interpretation of the mythos. Sort of like updating it for our time, with a different understanding of the roles of women and men then what was current while the Christian canon was in development. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say that it's returning to the gender roles evident within the original Jesus movement -- women were very powerful and wealthy widows were very much the finaniciers. Which is why the Church fathers (ahem) put so much effort into supressing them.

Unfortunately, the DaVinci Code isn't well enough written to survive as Holy Writ. But it has caught onto something that people feel about Christianity, anger at the authoritarism or the need for a central and significant feminine aspect to the Godhead.

The latter is why I see the DVC as an updating of the mythos. The feminine aspect within Catholicism is Mary, Virgin and Mother. But now women see themselves as more than mothers and definitely as sexual. So Mary Magdalene as partner fits contemporary needs better.

Religions are always rooted in 'historical fiction' -- they're about creation mythologies, how a society sees itself in relation to the wider world.

you know what you are quite hilarious... the Bible based on a bunch of myths and historical fiction? have you even read the Bible? obviously not, because if you did you would see that everything in the Bible is based on fact... take the Bible and take your history books and compare the facts...Noah's Ark and the Flood - fact, and to prove that to you, ALL cultures world-wide speak of this flood happening back in the day... if what you say is true, that the Bible is fictional, how is it that the Bible speaks of this flood occuring... look into also the history of the Israelite Kings, the Bible lists them and so does history
next question please..........

Establish a religion based on lies, and half truths?
Try Islam. Your dreams may have already come true.

That's such a stupid thing to say, haha! Start whatever "religion" you want to make another "religion" angry. Just makes you miserable, selfish, and prideful living to bring annoyance to others. Religion is a bunch of crap anyways, haha! Sounds like you're just angry and bitter! HAHA!
