I just took my braces off 1month ago after 3,5years!
I was worry like hell till i stop drink coffee and red wine for about a year. I also stop eating chocolate! But after hanging on about a year... came the desperado feel then i decided "to don't care" and started eat everything and you know what?
the color of my teeth still the same like before i put on the braces.
This is NO BULLSHIT.
My tips for you (which i comitted to do during "my desperado time") =
1. Brush your teeth after every meals. And don't be lazy to use the small brush that designed for the teeth between the brace wire before you go to bed.
2. Use Mouthwash. you may skip whatever events you'd like but NEVER skip to rinse before your bedtime.
3. Bring Dental floss everywhere you go beside your special ortho brush.
GOODluck. Don't forget to pray and wish for the fairy tooth to help take care your teeth :)

Use a waterpik everyday at least twice per day. Brush often and stay away from SODA. My sons secretly drank soda with their braces even after the dentist told them not too. It leaves marks on the teeth where the metal sits. They can be white blotches or if left untreated they can become cavities or just areas of no enamel and prone to cavities. It is ugly.
Watch the diet and do just what the dentist told you. Dont cheat.

Brush your teeth after every meal and use mouthwash. Get some of those plastic teeth picks (you can find them at a drugstore or get some from your orthodontist) to push food out from your brackets. Also, don't eat sticky, chewy or hard food (i.e. carmel, biting into lollypops, etc.) because it could break off your brackets. Make sure you always go to the orthodontist every six weeks for your adjustments too.

Mouthwash, brushing after every meal, using one of floss threaders to get stuff out of the braces. The water pic suggestion is good too.
As long as you are aware of the food you eat, you can make sure to clean it out and you shouldn't have many problems.

Didn't the personnel at your dentist's office provide this information to you? If not, get yourself another dentist.
