the govt issued worker program and earned their citizenship? Would they still be criminals?

my point is: why are you all against "amnesty aka not amnesty, the worker program allowing them to earn citizenship" if that would make them legal?

There's a bifurcated answer to your question. They'd still have entered the country illegally, so, they would still be guilty of having committed a criminal act. From that standpoint, the answer is yes, they would.

However, with some exceptions, I think most Americans would be pleased to see the current issue of illegal immigrants now within our borders resolved by a guest worker/citizenship program, so long as the program did not let people who entered the illegally "cut to the front of the line." I would consider anyone who gained citizenship in that fashion to be a legal citizen, so the answer is no, they would no longer be illegal, despite their prior illegal act.

In the interests of clarity, I would not support an ongoing program. People would need to sign up and comply within a specific window of opportunity, and anyone who did not, or entered the country illegally at a later date, should in my opinion be considered to have committed a criminal act and be sent back to their country of origin. So the answer again is yes.

This is an odd conundrum, really. The issue isn't actually about whether laws have been broken or whether illegal immigrants are guilty of a crime that should result in their deportation. It's about having turned a blind eye to the issue for so long that there are now far too many illegal immigrants to be able to physically collect and deport. And, because there are so many, the ability and willingness of Americans to continue to support the cost has reached its end.

There are a lot of people trying to cloud the issue by claiming illegal immigrants are owed something by the American people, but the truth is, every single one of those immigrants came here out of pure self-interest, and want to stay for precisely the same reason. If we were talking about Americans entering Canada illegally, or French entering Germany illegally, no one would be claiming the illegal immigrant was owed anything but a trip back to their home country.

Your question indicates some sense that you are looking for a way to wipe the slate clean, and I think that's good. But the illegal immigration problem will continue to exist. Our country has to be able to clearly define how it will be handled in the future, and define it in a manner that comports with our laws. I'm not saying the answer absolutely must be a wall, and armed border guards, but at this point there is no indication that Mexico has any intention of policing their border with us. If they want to be welcomed, people who want to emigrate here must begin to take responsibility for the manner in which they go about it, and obey our laws.

Wake up! Some of them want to be here legally but a lot do not. 85% of illegals in the USA are from Mexico. Every dollar they earn here is worth 10 back home. They can come here illegally, work for a while, and then go when they are "finished" here. They do not want citizenship. Seeing them waving their flags and screaming "VIVA LA MEXICO" in the streets is all the proof I need that they don't want to be American.

I think the problem is this:

You have 1 legal immigrant from whatever country you want them to be from. This person has the right to live, work. travel in the US with no problems.
Then he/she gets this letter from "home" saying how horrible it is and that the entire family of 20 want to come and live with him/her.
Ok, except they do not do it legally. Instead, they all work under that 1 legal immigrant's social security number OR work for cash under the table. (I know it can be done, because a factory in my home town had to pay alot of fees because they hired illegal workers all using 1 SS number)
They don't all pay the taxes they are suppose to be paying, so why is that fair to anyone who was born here or for those who are in the process of becoming a legal citizen?

It cost too much and then you do that for one group and then everyone will want it. You give them and inch they walk all over you. Its no different then this so called war that bush is having he says if we quit now then they will look down on the US so if we give them amnesty now they will take advantage and want it all the time!

If they become legal working aliens, they'd be paying taxes like everyone else. They'll have proper documentation too. That will make life easier.

Illegal is illegal.

I'm adamantly against illegal immigration, I don't care what country the people came from, it's illegal, it's not right, no if's, and's, or but's. Period. No amnesty, no excuses, let's have our laws enforced. No sanctuary cities, no more handouts, no illegal employment, none of it.

If they have already come here illegally, they are criminals and that won't change. But if they went back and did things the legal way that would be better.

Whenever we have a problem first look at the root of the problem, who stole this land and killed thousands of indians, and then set their own rules in a land that they don't own. Lets take Irak, or vietnam, or somalia, the us. has always tried to enforce their laws, when they were the ones that ironically created them over an invasion.
