He may have an ear infection, or ear mites. If you look inside his ears, you'll see the evidence of his scratching, plus a lot of black, smelly earwax and possibly bloody pus resulting from infection. You may even see the mites, though they are very tiny.
Take him to the vet and have him checked. He will prescribe either an antibiotic ointment you squeeze into his ears several times a day and squish down into the ear canal, or a miticide drop for his ears.
This happens mostly with dogs with flopped over ears without a lot of fur in them to protect stuff from getting inside. You might also visually check to see if someone (a child) has stuck something deep into your puppy's ears.
Poor puppy's in obvious pain. Please take him to the vet.

Have him checked for ear mites like everyone has stated but also check that there is no back up of bacteria deep within his ears. This happened to my baby a couple of months ago. I thought they were earmites or maybe a tick that had made its way down deep. My poor baby would yelp and constantly shake his head just to not have to scratch himself. He was in so much pain when I took him to the vet that they had to use a tranquilzer just to be able to get near him and hold his ear. They found a backup of bacteria that had to be scraped out. Few drops of meds for a couple of weeks and my baby is all better.

You really need to take your puppy to the vet. It could be a number of things from ear mites to an ear infection, or allergies. When my dog was a puppy he had an ear infection twice. The vet gave me some ear drops to put in his ear twice daily that got rid of the infection.

It sounds like he might have an ear infection or ear mites...Take him to the vet and have them checked...If it is an ear infection you don't want to wait, if an ear infection goes without treatment your dog might go deaf in that ear. So take him to the Vet ASAP! They will clean them out and give you some medicine for whatever is wrong. It's obvious that he is in allot of pain.

He may have a yeast infection, a build up of ear wax, or mites (ear mites are less common in dogs than in cats, but he could still have them).
You can get ear-cleaning solutions through any large pet supply outlet (like www.drsfostersmith.com) for a nominal fee. You just squirt it in the dog's ears and then let the dog "shake" it out. The solutions help to ear out wax build up and return the ear canal to its normal PH (to help fight infection).
We suggest though that you take your dog to a vet to have him checked. If it IS an infection or mites, the vet can prescribe medication that will help to clear up the problem.

You should take him to the vet. Otherwise, you are just guessing at what is wrong with him (it could be anything from ear mites, to an ear infection, to allergies, to something not so common) and possibly making the problem worse by treating him for something he doesn't have.

sounds to me like he might have ear mites or an infection or possibly an allergy. I would recommend taking him to the vet and having them check it out, you don't want to give over the counter meds if you aren't sure what your pup may have. also....what kind of puppy?....long eared dogs have a tendency to have more ear problems throughout their life because they don't get enough air in the ear and bacteria grows quicker. then you have to check it more often and clean them more.

Could be ear mites or an ear infection. Tho you can buy mite meds at the pet supply stores, you shouldn't do it unless you know for sure that's what it is. Mite meds won't help an ear infection and could irritate it more.
See your vet for sure to have your pup looked at.

He might have ear mites; might have an ear infection; might have hot spots behind the ears; they don't scratch for no reason, so I'd have your dog checked out.

You might want to take him to the vet, to make sure he doesn't have an ear infection. Dogs can get the same things human's get, and if they keep scatching at their ears, that might be a cause.
