If you did not promote what ever you do then you would have no client base or sell anything so therefor no business no income how would you survive?
1: To get you or your company noticed
2:To be able to sell whatever it is you are offering
3:To raise awareness in what you do and what you have to offer
4: To hopefully make money
5:To show your product
6:To increase sales
7: to show others you are the best of the best
8:To be repetative so clients can see you are not a fly by night so if it does not produce once try try again.
Golden rule if you promote it costs money that eats at profit so ALWAYS monitor you advertising or else you are sticking money down the drain.
Hope that is the type of answer you where expecting.

Promotion is just one part of the marketing mix, traditionally know as the 4P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. Three other P’s: People, Process, Physical Evidence, have been introduced as marketing has become more sophisticated. Each P is important as there is no point in spending money promoting a product that is poorly produced, badly priced (to cheap/ to expensive) or which cannot be obtained in the market place. All need to be addressed and a position taken that takes into account your competitors offering and your potential customers.
There is a lot written on the subject, for more information take a look at the pdf produced by the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

I would say promotion is important if you are selling products or services or even information. Like this woman here http://lost-newbie.blogspot.com She's been jobless for the past 12 months. She's lost and she created a blogger to seek advice. She's not trying to sell anything but to provide information.
