Is it common during layovers, for crewmembers to hang out in each other’s hotel rooms? My fiancé, an FO, is telling me that it is standard in the aviation industry. My experience in the business world is that it's inappropriate to enter a colleague's hotel room.

Of course you can guess why I am asking. He hung out in a female flight attendant's room one evening. They watched TV, ate pizza and played cards. I believe that it was totally innocent, but it still makes me uneasy. It gives a bad impression and I don’t understand why neither of them thought to of going to the hotel’s common area to hang out.

Is this the kind of worry and uneasiness I can look forward to as a pilot’s wife?

Spending time with co-workers out on a trip is natural, we often eat and go shopping together when we have to share a rental car.

Spending time with the WHOLE crew (about 6 or 8 people) in one of the hotel rooms happens sometimes and can be innocent enough (most of the time).

But if he was alone with her, then...sorry!

Until recently, I was a flight attendant for a major airline for 20 years. It was NOT common for us to hang out in each other's rooms. In fact, because the airline had so many employees, a lot of the time I had never even met my crewmembers before the start of trip. Occasionally, we would all get together for a meal, but that was about it. After being surrounded by a multitude of passengers all day, we usually craved a little bit of solitude. I would think twice about marrying this fella.

This happens all the time. Sometimes it is innocent, sometimes it is not, and that's between your husband and you. But it's very common for co-workers in the flight crew to end up in eachother's rooms. It's also common to see the whole crew drunk and jumping in the hotel fountain, or taking their shirts off at the bar, and doing all sorts of other semi-moronic things. If you're really concerned, you should let your husband know that it makes you feel uneasy and ask him to stick to the lobby or concierge lounge when hanging with the co-workers. But I've seen plenty of situations where the crew may not have behaved but still didn't break anyone's marriage vows.

A high number of people today engage in inappropriate behavior, not just in aviation. His response to your question indicates that he doesn't care what is appropriate. I am a married pilot myself, and have flown with both female pilots and flight attendants. I do not hang out with females while I'm traveling at anytime. When I do get asked, I politely say, "no thanks". I also keep in constant communication with my wife.

The man you're engaged to is, in my opinion, behaving in a way that can hurt a relationship, unless you're a swinger. If he respected you, he wouldn't be doing it. My concern, though, is that you might label all pilots in a bad light. You have to look at his individual behaviour.

My feeling is that if you stay with him, you're heading for trouble.

Yes, you might be uneasy from time to time. Doesn't mean he is wrong though. Talk it out.

The airline industry is about the closest thing to paytons place as you can get.

It wasn't just cards he was playing. Stews are fun and tittilating, they want to get screwed as much as the pilots!
