Judy my mom too had cancer....she had pancreatic cancer there is no cure for this. Hopefully your mother has a form of cancer that can be treated. I am sorry to say my mother is no longer here however when she was I was reluctant to visit with her. I am married with two children and I always called but did not visit often since I did not like to see her sick. The best thing you can do for your mother is try to talk to her often, do little things for her that you know she would like without her having to ask and spend as much quality time as you can with her. I dont know how old you are but letting your mom talk about it to you as an adult also helps. I did not want to believe my mom was this sick however I wish now that I would have spent more time listening to her as she needed someone to talk to. You see she is also very upset and probably afraid of leaving her family and having her family watch her go through such a horrible disease. There are treatments out there that can cure cancer also there are treatments that can extend life please just be there for your mom and try to let her have a shoulder to lean on. She will definitely need one. If I had the chance to go back I would spend many happy hours with my mom whether it be helping her when she needs it or just talking to her about our lives. Good luck and god bless both of you.

I'm sorry to hear that.
My mom died of Acute Leukemia nearly 10 years ago when I was 16 (she did not die of the cancer itselft - she caught pneumonia after her bone marrow transplant)

There are 3 things you can do right now:
1. Be there for your Mom, let her know you love and support her
2. Realize that there is nothing you can do about the cancer; her life (and yours) are in God's hands.
3. Do some research on her type of cancer, this may help to ease your mind.

Cancer is a VERY scary word - most people automatically think of "death" when they hear it. But, today, the success rates for cancer patients is VERY high! There are numerous treatments for the many different types of cancer. Not all cancers are life threatening and are easily treatable. Some do take a little more time to fight.
Be there for your mom and help give her the strength for whatever lies ahead.

God Bless --

I am so sorry for you. They can treat cancer a lot better than they did 20 years ago, and some people recover from it now than in the past. There are all kinds of reading materials even on the Internet about the different types of cancer and stages. Be strong for your mom, and help her out by doing things she needs done. Make her feel special and don't be sad around her because that might get her depressed.
Pray for healing.

I think I can help you with this... as I am going thru chemo myself right now.

Ive heard it said that it's not just one person who gets cancer - it's the whole family. everyone in the family is involved and devastated by the disease.

I just want to let you know, that you shouldn't feel bad about being scared. It's a natural reaction. The most important thing you need to do for yourself and for your mother is to be sure you don't do any harm - to yourself or her. This means, take good care of yourself. Eat good, get enough rest, balance time with your friends as well. Make sure your life goes on, and enjoy the good times when they come up. This is what your Mother wants for you, and if she see's you doing well, she's going to feel better. If she sees you struggling, she will worry about you, and she needs all the energy she has right now to recover.

Be proactive! Find out about what kind of cancer she has. Learn how to prepare some simple meals for her! Maybe help out around the house a little.

Here's the most important thing you can do for your Mom... learn to listen.

When I told my family & friends I had a serious disease, the all had the same reaction. They all said... oh, it's alright, it will be ok... but you know, it's not. I will never be the same. The wrost thing was that nobody would listen to me talk. Nobody heard me. The subject was always changed whenever I tried to talk about my fears.

Let your mother talk about her fears. Listen to her. Ask her about it. She will appreciate this more than I can ever tell you. Just let her talk, and you just listen. Dont tell her she is wrong, and that everything will be fine - it's ok to say you hope everything will turn out ok, but please dont negate what she tells you.

Just be the brave, strong, courageous person you are!

Finally, there is so much help out there for you - lots of supports groups, and counselors to help you sift thru all the details you need to go thru - Im sure your mom would appreciate their helping you!!! You can get details from her doctor.

Trust the process... You are on the path fate has chosen for you!

Be strong....have Faith, and trust that she will be ok....I know this is very hard, not only for you but everyone involved. I had cancer about 3 years ago, it can be beat. In todays medicine , this is not a death sentence anymore. There are so many treatments and new drugs out there, that her chances should be very good. Talk.....it is the best thing you can do....talk to her about it, she is scared too. Learn all you can about whatever type of cancer she has, so you can help her. Pray together, and live each day to the fullest. I know it sounds hard to do. But with each day, it will get easier as you learn more....I will pray for your family, and I wish you all the BEST !!!!!

it seems today they can do so many things for cancer then they could before. Just be supportive to her and keep her upbeat as much as you can. Research her type of cancer and ask questions. Doing this will help you to understand it a lot better. When you hear the word Cancer it scares you to death I know but at the same time it can be beaten. Good luck to you ;o)

First of all, do not take this as a death notice! Most types of cancer have many types of treatment now. There are also many experimental drugs. Be supportive of her - and also give her time to deal with the problems she is facing.

Try not to be judgemental when she is having a tough day - think how you'd feel if you were in her place.

Good luck - and remember, the internet has many places to obtain iformation.

You don't say what type of cancer your mom has. If caught early many times cancer patients can live long lives. Be sure she is informed of all possible treatments. Be supportive and respect her wishes for treatment. Encourage her to make important decisions soon so that her final wishes can be carried out later. Spend time with her.

I work on the cancer floor at a local hospital in my area. First of all don't panic. These things can be beat. It's a little less scary for you if you learn about the treatments right along side your mother. Being well informed about what she is going to go through will help you to be more understanding and supportive for her. Remember to be strong for her and yourself. This CAN be beaten and is not necessarily a death sentence! Be strong and be there for her. Best Wishes.

The first thing you should do is catch your breath. Now, you need to find out what kind of cancer and start researching. Don't be afraid to ask her doctors any and all questions you may have. Many types of cancer are curable, especially if you catch them early. Find other people out there who have gone through the same thing. It always helps to have someone to talk to that's been there before.
