Benefits, I doubt it. Aside from it being a dairy product.
It is high in fat and such, but just try to train your taste buds to eat less of on sandwiches if you're worried about weight or health.

Your last line answers your own question. The benefit is it makes things taste better. I happen to hate mayonnaise on my sandwich but i can't dream of not using it in tuna salad, egg salad, chicken salad etc.. Homemade is really good, not hard to make but it doesn't last that long. As long as you aren't eating jars of mayonaisse every week it can be a part of a healthy diet. Moderation is the key to everything.

There is nothing wrong with a little mayo once in a while. Recently Hellmans came out with a canola based mayo that is very high in omega3's, very good for your heart. There is no taste difference what so ever.

mayo is raw egg yolks and vegetable oil whipped together - - not horribley bad for you in moderation but mostly fat. you could always make your own and avoid toxic chemicals put in by the manufacturers but who ever does? sandwich spread is even worse...but how can you have a toasted tomato without mayo??

Take a jar of mayo. Stick it in the blender for about 5 minutes. Let it sit and wait and come back together.. BAM!! You've got plastic!!!
But home made mayo is better for you..

You can live quite easily without any mayonnaise at all.
I for one, would miss my Best Foods mayo with cold cracked crab and artichokes.
Try making your own: eggs and oil and lemon juice! that's all!
Add some garlic for aioli, or curry and herbs for fish sauce.

Just taste.... not nutritious in any way.... I've learned to like mustard more and use it instead of mayo on all sandwiches and stuff like that....
