Well Biscuit is now 3 months old and we are going on our first long road trip. He has rode in the car a lot, but not for so long. He will be in the car for 31/2 hours. Does anyone have any advice on making his trip a good one. He is going to be riding in his crate. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

I have to say...I did not think about taking water that he is used to. My son got so sick when he was 3 months old, from drinking water on vacation. Oh my I think I have a winner...

Hi!
Gee, it looks like you've gotten a lot of great answers and advice, I just wanted to add, that we always take jugs of water from home, especially when a pup is still so young, so that it is what he is used to having normally. That way we know that our pup won't wind up maybe having water that is or has something different in it than the norm, to keep them from getting an upset tummy. ( Think of it as how people say when you go to Mexico, don't drink the water, LOL ).
Ya know, when you fly a dog on an airline, they attach a cup to inside the crate and put a few ice cubes in it, so as you travel it melts and puppy can't spill!
Good luck, hoping that you and Biscut have a great trip!

Put a nice blanket in the crate so he is comfortable, and bring a few toys(1-2) and bring some doggie treats, but don't give them to him all the time you don't want to make him car sick. Also, make sure you take him out of the car and stop at a rest stop and take him for a walk for about 5mins, just in case he needs to use the bathroom. And when you get to the place you are going, reward him with either treats or a good dinner....LOL....Good Luck on your trip, I'm sure you'll have fun.

We've taken our dog twice on road trips to my daughter's home. It takes about 7 hours. I give her some Benadryl before we leave and then place her in her kennel on a towel with a couple of chew toys. She also eats an hour and a half before we leave. During the trip she only gets a few sips of water and a potty break when we stop every 2-3 hours. I then feed her when we reach our destination. She does fine with this routine.

It's ok for him to only drink at rest stops. You can either put his water in a sealable plastic dish or get one of those doggy water bottles at the pet store or bring a dish and a normal water bottle. If you have a plastic dish with a lid but the seal isn't quite good enough for water, put plastic wrap over the dish, then put the lid on. Those doggy water bottles are quite convenient, especially if your dog is going to be traveling with you a fair bit. It's like a regular water bottle in size, but has an attachment that flips down to make a 'dish' so the dog can drink comfortably. They seal well. I think they're about $6.- or $8.- depending on size at a good-sized pet supply store.
Bring a blanket or cushion and a couple of toys. If he bores easily and starts looking for mischief, give him one or two toys before the rest stop (I agree with the another answerer who suggested stopping to walk him halfway there) and exchange them for different toys after the stop. He'll be fine.

Take his favorite toys. The ones with treats hidden inside are always good on a trip. Stop every hour or so to give him a good drink of water. This will also give him a chance to do his business and stretch his legs. Have a good trip.

I have 2 pups. We had to take them on a 10 hour trip. (each way) I put there bed on the back seat. I had toys. And I also had there food and water bowels. Also don't forget the bottled water. Different water might give the upset bellys.(yuck!) I took them on a quick short walk when ever we stopped. They did great.

Check with your vet about getting dramamine. They can give you the proper concentrations and dosages for your dog.
I didn't know my chihuahua got carsick until our first road trip (he's fine with riding around town) and trust me, driving with a sick dog is a horrible experience.
Now, I'm not saying give it to him before you go if you don't think he will get sick, but it will be a lifesaver if he does. (also bring and extra towel or blankie, and some paper towels and 409 for quick clean-ups.)
What everyone else has said is dead-on too. Blankets, treats, rawhide. Water should be fine at rest stops. I use a tupperware container and it works great.

There you go ,,, two thumbs up.
Stop for a potty brake somewhere around half way. First give him some water and then let him out to pee. Don't put water in the crate when you are moving unless you want a huge mess.

i'm so sorry to your loss!! My mom and that i had to place my formative years canines down some months in the past. That grew to become into almost the toughest concern I honestly have ever had to do. It extremely felt like loosing a member of my kinfolk. Trish grew to become into approximately 14-15 and a chow mixture. i can't say for valuable why your canines died yet canines do have lots shorter life span then people do. It seems such as you canines grew to become into enjoyed deeply and had a great life, according to hazard it grew to become into merely her time to pass. i know that's complicated to handle, relatively loosing a kinfolk member yet merely undergo in ideas, she is in pup heaven now, chasing all the automobiles and kitty's she likes:-) i'm sorry if i did no longer completely answer your question yet merely know that despite the fact that if it grew to become into heart failure or no longer, your loved ones enjoyed her and he or she enjoyed you. i like canines and it does stink that they've this variety of short life span whilst in comparison with us people. despite the fact that if it extremely is all an element of life- this might sounds corny yet attempt to no longer consume your self up over it- i'm valuable she could have needed you to be happy.
