We get puppy food and make it real soupy with warm water in a big shallow pan. Take the mother away so she won't eat it or growl or nip at the puppies. Place the puppies to the pan or even stick their front feet into the pan and they will begin to drink/eat the food by themselves. Whatever they don't eat, we let mommy back in to clean up the bowl as you always want to give the pups fresh food and water. Fix the puppies a pan of water but be sure it is shallow in case they get into it, they can get out. Never leave a tall/deep bucket pan of water in with the puppies (not even for mommy) as they have been known to drown in them. By 4 weeks of age, the puppies should be able to eat the food dry. Around 5 weeks, we only let the mother dog in to nurse a couple of times a day and by 6 weeks, once a day for a few days to dry her up slowly. Good luck! Don't forget to worm those puppies too!!!

If they are getting plenty of milk from mom, they will probably have no interest in puppy food right now. It is usually around 5 weeks when I start weaning mine. I heat up some water and pour it over the dry food, let it set until it gets soft. The pups will start eating soon enough. You have yo kreep mama dog away while you are feeding them or mama dog will eat all the food. I always let the mama eat whatever is left after the pups finished. You can feed them puppy food a couple of times a day, morning and night and let mama dog nurse them the rest of the time. The mama dog should nurse them at least until 6 weeks old, but sometimes they do not want to let them nurse after the teeth start coming in. Good luck caring for those precious babies.

Well, it likely was your fault, but I have to admit that I would probably do the same thing if I saw a puppy running loose. I have, actually, and I have caught large dogs as well, but they have come to me when called or coaxed and I did not scruff them, but put a leash on them instead. As for everyone saying that this pup is abnormal, perhaps it is just going through a fear stage. I had a huge mixed breed who was afraid of everything when she was that age,and I've also had a VICIOUS 3 week old pup: <<<

I am not sure what breed of dog you have. But we start our puppies when their eyes open on mushy puppy food. This is around day 15 or so. So get some quality puppy food soften it and also put firm with it. Offer it as several meals a day with fresh water. You will be surprised how quickly they will start eating. Blessings, Kelly

The mother dog will wean them herself, you have to introduce the puppy food to them though. get a milk substitute and mix it with wet and mostly dry puppy food that works the best. Try to feed them small amounts of the mixture when they are about 5 weeks old. Good luck!

I start my puppies on warm mash at 3 weeks. They are small breeds also. Put puppy kibble and water in the microwave, let it get soft, and wait until it is cool enough for them to eat. You may need to make it "soupy" at first, so they will start by drinking the water.

introduce the hard/soft puppy food to them. take them one by one or as a group and show them the food let them sniff it and taste it. still let them drink form thier mom a coupl times a day but also take them into another room away form mom and show them the puppy food and water. then after a couple weeks just give them the puppy food. mommy will stop feeding them and encourage them to eat the hard food also

why would you pull 4 week old puppies away from the mom? Let them nurse for as long as the mother will let them, they need the antibodies from her that they only get from nursing. And by the time she starts weaning them, they'll need to start their Vet visits to get puppy shots
